BUTTERFLY GIRL

AS THE SUMMER CEREMONIAL CYCLE ENDS, THE SOCIAL DANCES OF HOPI BEGIN. ONE OF THE FAVORITE DANCES IS THE BUTTERFLY DANCE WHERE THE YOUNG GIRLS OF THE VILLAGE PICK A MALE COUNTERPART TO DANCE WITH IN THE PLAZA. USUALLY, THE GIRL IS REQUIRED TO WEAR YELLOW SOCKS TO SYMBOLIZE THE POLLEN THAT THE BUTTERFLIES PICK UP AS THEY FLUTTER FROM FLOWER TO FLOWER. IN THIS PAINTING, I PRESENT THE BUTTERFLY IN THE PHYSICAL ASPECT (THE DANCER), THE SPIRITUAL ASPECT (THE BUTTERFLY) AND IN THE SYMBOLIC ASPECT (THE TERRA COTTA TRIANGLE DESIGNS TO THE RIGHT).
