HARVEST FESTIVAL

THE DESIGN OF THIS PAINTING IS BASED ON THE BASIC CONCEPT OF HOPI ART. ALMOST EVERY MEDIUM OF HOPI USES SYMBOLS REPRESENTING CLOUDS, AND THERE ARE MANY SYMBOLS. IN THIS PAINTING, THE HEOTO KATSINAM FACE ONE ANOTHER AND THEIR. OVERALL SHAPE IS THE SYMBOL FOR A CLOUD (ALL KATSINAM REPRESENT CLOUD DIETIES). THEY ARE RISING FROM THE GROUND TO CREATE RAIN, AND AS THE RAIN FALLS TO THE GROUND (SYMBOLIZED BY THE WHITE DASHES BETWEEN THE KATSINAM), THE CORN GROWS TALL AND HEALTHY AROUND THEM. HARVEST TIME IS A SPECIAL TIME WHEN THEIR PRAYERS AND CEREMONIES ARE ANSWERED BY THE ABUNDANCE OF THEIR CROPS, AND THEY CELEBRATE WITH SONG AND DANCE
