STARGAZERS

AS WE GROW UP IN THIS WORLD, WE ALL HAVE SIMILAR EXPERIENCES INVOLVING THE STARS. AS CHILDREN WE STARE AT THE SKY TO SEE SHOOTING STARS. THEN, AS TEENAGERS, WE BECOME ROMANTIC AND AGAIN FIND OURSELVES GAZING AT THE STARS. AS ADULTS WE TEND TO LOOK TO THE STARS ONCE AGAIN TO FIND ANSWERS, EITHER THROUGH SCIENCE OR ASTROLOGY. IN ANCIENT TIMES, THE STARS HELD INFORMATION FROM THE GODS. IN THIS PAINTING, I CREATED A LARGE STAR WITH SIX POINTS FOR THE SIX DIRECTIONS THAT ARE RECOGNIZED IN HOPI. IN EACH POINT I HAVE CLOUD SYMBOLS - AN IMPORTANT FACET IN MODERN HOPI LIFE. IN THE CENTER, AN ANCIENT VILLAGE IS RESTING HIGH ON TOP OF THE MESA WITH A CLEAR VIEW OF THE STARS. DIVIDING THE CENTER PAINTING FROM THE SIX POINTS IS A CIRCLE, SYMBOLIZING THE CIRCLE OF LIFE. IT IS MADE FROM BAMBOO, THE INSTRUMENT THAT BROUGHT US INTO THE FOURTH WORLD.
