TAWA'S SONG

THE HOPI'S OF NORTHERN ARIZONA MAINTAIN AN ANNUAL CEREMONIAL CYCLE THAT CONCENTRATES ON THE CULTIVATION OF THEIR CROPS. THESE CEREMONIES CENTER AROUND THE KATSINAM, WHO VISIT US FROM THE SPIRIT WORLD TO SING AND DANCE IN PRAYER FOR OUR CORN TO GROW HEALTHY. IN THIS PAINTING, I HAVE TAWA, THE FATHER OF ALL KATSINAM, SINGING HIGH IN THE SKY. THE PETROGLYPH SYMBOLS ARE THESE ANCIENT SONGS FALLING FROM THE SKY TO NURTURE THE CORN BELOW.
