UNCERTAIN NOBILITY

THE SHALAKO OF HOPI IS CONSIDERED TO BE ONE OF THE OLDEST AND MOST SACRED OF THE HOPI KATSINAM. TO SOME, THEY HAVE REACHED THE STATUS OF NOBILITY SINCE THEY PERFORM SO INFREQUENTLY. WHEN ONE HAS THE OPPORTUNITY TO OBSERVE THE CEREMONY, THEY CAN SEE THE ANTIQUITY OF THEIR DRESS AND FEEL THE STRENGTH AND POWER OF THEIR PRESENCE. THEY APPEAR EARLY IN THE MORNING, COMING UP FROM BELOW THE MESA, SO ONE COULD ACTUALLY SEE THE SHALAKO PEERING OVER THE EDGE OF THE MESA - AS I HAVE PORTRAYED HERE. THIS PAINTING, FOR ME, REPRESENTS THE UNCERTAINTY OF THE CONTINUANCE OF THIS CEREMONY.
