My style for a Corn Maiden is truly a unique and artistic rendition for a Hopi sculpture. The original concept for this design came from a dream. I saw Katsinam flying from the ears of corn, and the husks of the corn turned into the robes of the Katsinam. After carving the piece, I still had a problem with its presentation until I finally came up with the idea of a post and pedestal format, which is different from traditional Hopi carvings. The Corn Maiden in my design represents Mother Corn. These ears of corn are separated from other ears of corn by the tassels that appear instead of silk. They are considered to be a perfect ear of corn. They are used for ceremony and gifted to the people involved. Part of the belief is that a person will never go hungry if they have a Mother Corn, because they can always grow their own food. This can be bridged into a more modern concept of fruition in that it is a form of comfort because it can symbolize the security of having everything that you really need to survive.
