The Hoho Mana usually appears in July during the Niman Ceremony. She accompanies the Hemis Katsina and will usually dance next to the male dancer as she sings along with him. During part of the dance, she will rest on her knees and play a gourd instrument that replicates the call of a frog. The raspy sound created by the gourd instrument, along with the noise of the rattles and shells, creates a most unusual sound. Combined with the song, it truly creates the feeling of a supernatural presence.
