Just completed my next museum quality contemporary Hopi Sculpture. This one is the Warrior Woman, or He’e’e, who is considered a warrior Spirit. Legend says that many years ago, some Hopis were living outside of the main village and a mother had just finished putting up the hair whorls on one side of her daughter’s head. The hair on the other side was still hanging down when they saw enemies sneaking toward the village. The young girl quickly picked up a bow, quiver and arrows and led the defense of the village until the men in the fields could return to defeat the enemy. This katsina honors the Warrior Maiden or Hé-é-é as she continues to guard the village.

This piece is different than the others I have carved in this style. The first and most difficult change was in the rain sash. Normally it is a white plaited sash with a long fringe that is attaached from the left of the hip instead of my sculptural interpretation where I always placed it hanging from the right side of the hip, so It’s more of an accurate presentation. Also, I did the same thing with the singular hair whorl, depicting that with more as it appears. I like the change is lines and carving the balls on the sash is entirely new for me in the sculptural style. For more information, please visit my website listed in the comments.
